Guilt and shame are like festering raw open wounds in our life. The solution for guilt and shame is much like a story about a boy who got his hand stuck in a jar. He asked his mom and dad for help. They tried pulling, pushing, butter, etc. and nothing worked. His hand was still stuck. Finally, the little boy asked his parents “Should I let go of the marble I’m holding?” Well, yes, and when he did, his hand was freed. Guilt and shame are the same way, we hold onto them and wonder why we are stuck. If we let go, give them to God, we are freed.
Jesus tells us “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.
If we want to be freed from guilt and shame there are three steps we can take:
First, come to him. Tell him these are too difficult to carry. Trust Jesus to carry your guilt and shame.
Second, let go. Jesus tells us to take his yoke, but to do that, we get to lay our burdens at his feet. Visualize yourself laying guilt and shame at Jesus’ feet.
Third, we take up. Accept the gift of God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness. Believe it and walk in that truth. Live like his forgiveness is truth, even if you don’t feel the truth. Remember, Jesus died on the cross. It is finished. God has forgiven us already. Are you still living like he’s not? Remind yourself of this truth daily until you believe it.
