Three Steps to Forgive Yourself

How are your New Year’s resolutions coming along? I hope you’re doing better than I am because mine are already broken. It’s the time of year I feel guilt and shame over breaking my resolutions. Much like a little boy who asked his mom for help because his hand was stuck in a jar. She tried everything but the little boy’s hand stayed stuck.

Guilt and shame are similar, we get stuck when we hold onto them. However, Jesus offers us some advice which says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.

This boy’s story is much like my own with guilt and shame. And like the mom of the boy, Jesus also offers us three steps to rescue from guilt and shame.

First, like the boy, I call out for help to Jesus and admit I’m stuck.

Second, the boy asked his mom if he should let go of the marble he was holding. Are you holding onto the marble of guilt and shame? Trust Jesus to carry it.

Third, I open my hand, let the marble drop and accept Jesus gift of grace, mercy and forgiveness. Believe this truth, even when you don’t feel it.

Our freedom comes when we let go and give guilt and shame to God. By laying our burdens down, we allow grace, mercy and God’s forgiveness into our lives.

Summary: I come to Jesus. I let go of guilt and shame. I take up mercy and grace.
