God Still Speaks: How to Listen and Know

God still speaks to His people today, just as He did in Scripture, using a variety of pathways. His voice may come through:

  • Circumstances
  • Scripture
  • Other people
  • Visions
  • Dreams
  • Nature
  • Prayer
  • Thoughts and ideas

But how do we recognize His voice in the middle of it all?

How to Recognize God’s Voice

God’s voice can sound different than what we expect. It’s not usually loud or dramatic, but rather consistent, calm, and deeply rooted in truth. Here are a few signs that it may be God speaking:

  • A thought that stretches you beyond your comfort zone
  • A persistent, recurring idea or nudge
  • A firm but gentle prompting—never negative or condemning
  • A new, positive insight into a situation or struggle

God’s voice often brings clarity, peace, and conviction. It may challenge you, but it won’t shame you. It aligns with Scripture and leads you closer to His heart.

A Simple Technique for Discernment

If you’re unsure whether you’re hearing from God, try this practical approach to aligning your heart with His will:

  1. Find a quiet space
Center yourself on God. Slow down. Invite Him to speak.
  2. Lay down your agenda
Be fully open to whatever He might say—even if it’s not what you expect or want.
  3. Ask a simple question
Should I do this or that? Should I go here or stay put?
  4. “Try on” each option
Think about each choice intentionally. Picture it. Now ask yourself:
Which one brings a sense of peace?
  5. Pay attention to peace
If one choice consistently feels more peaceful, that may be God’s gentle nudge.
  6. Repeat if needed
If you’re still unsure, revisit the options in prayer. The answer may come through clarity over time.

Remember, God doesn’t rush or confuse. His direction will be accompanied by peace, even if it requires faith.

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? Numbers 23:19

Train Yourself to Listen

Listening to God is something we grow into. Every situation is different, so it’s important to keep asking, keep seeking, and stay open. You can’t know what God wants for your life unless you ask—and then take time to truly listen.
